Decommissioning of Euler III
After more than 5 years of operation, Euler III will be decommissioned on 18 May 2022.
This part of Euler was revolutionary because ETH was one of the first sites in the world to use HPE's "Moonshot" system for HPC applications. Back in 2016, we chose this architecture because it offered small but fast CPUs (4-core Intel Xeon E3-1585Lv5) in a very dense form factor (405 compute nodes per rack!). Thanks to their high frequency (up to 3.7 GHz), these CPUs were perfect for single-core applications where time-to-solution is critical.
Euler III contained 1215 of these CPUs. Unfortunately, as they get older, their failure rate has increased to a point where keeping Euler III in operation is no longer economical. Newer compute nodes offer the same (or even higher) CPU speed, and are more efficient in terms of space, power and cooling.
Like Euler I and II, Euler III will be bought back by HPE, and the money from this sale will be reinvested in new compute nodes for the public share of Euler. After some reconfiguration, the corresponding racks will be reused for GPU nodes.
Since these CPUs are only found in Euler III, all jobs that explicitly request Intel Xeon E3-1585Lv5 CPUs will not be able to run after 18 May 2022.
